FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
-
You absolutely can do it yourself.
A finished room can make design look simple, but in reality it is far more complex, detailed and methodical than it appears. A successful scheme relies on careful planning, technical understanding, and years of accumulated knowledge.
Of course, many people create lovely homes on their own. But it’s no different to anything else — you can cook a meal, but a chef will do it better. You can plant a garden, but a gardener understands what will thrive and where.
What a designer brings is not just an eye, but depth of experience. We have access to trusted suppliers, specialist craftspeople, and materials that are not always readily available. We are also constantly exposed to design at a different level, which shapes how we think and how we solve problems.
Working with a designer is not about whether something is possible, it is about how well it is executed. Ultimately, it comes down to what you value, and how important the outcome is to you.
Most of our clients come to us when they realise they don’t just want a finished space, they want a meticulous approach and a creative eye that they simply could not have imagined on their own.
-
Earlier than you think.
The biggest compromises we see come from decisions made too early, without a fully considered design to work from.
I often say to clients, if you don’t yet know that a particular wall will hold a significant piece of art, how could you possibly know where to position the lighting to highlight it properly? Equally, a floor socket for a table lamp will be missed entirely if the furniture layout hasn’t been resolved first.
These are small details, but they are what make a space feel considered.
What often happens is that key elements, electrics, layouts and plumbing are fixed too soon, and the design then has to work around decisions that were made without the full picture. In reality, you have to design ahead, so that those early first fix elements are right.
If you bring us in early, we can shape those decisions properly. If you bring us in later, we will still help, but there are always things that can’t be undone.
-
You don’t need a polished brief.
Plans, photos, a rough timeline, an indication of your investment level, and a sense of what isn’t working is more than enough.
Most clients come to us because they don’t have the answers, that’s the point.
Being open about budget early on is helpful. It allows us to align your investment with your aspirations and expectations, and guide you towards the right decisions from the outset.
We’re very approachable, and these early conversations shouldn’t feel intimidating, they are simply the starting point for understanding what’s possible.

We have delivered many projects, and the importance of following a clear methodology cannot be understated.
Every project begins with understanding you, how you live, how you move through your home, how you entertain, and what you want your space to feel like.
This is where we set the brief, not just in terms of aesthetics, but in how the home needs to support and enhance the rituals of your day-to-day life. A home is everything, it is where we rest, where we gather, where life happens. It should support you through both the ordinary and the more challenging moments. Good design is not merely about how something looks, but how it performs.
From there, we move into concept design, where we begin to shape ideas for your space. We may use CGIs at this stage to help you visualise the direction before we move forward.
Once the concept is agreed, we develop the design in detail. This is where the work becomes more technical, layouts are refined, complex challenges are resolved, materials are carefully curated, and bespoke elements are designed.
There are a significant number of decisions within this stage, and they are never made in isolation. Each one is layered, considered, and interdependent. Our role is to lead this process methodically, drawing on years of experience so that nothing feels arbitrary or disjointed.
Once the design is fully developed and signed off, we move into project coordination, ensuring that what has been designed is implemented on site to the standard we expect. Alongside this, we manage procurement, and complete the final installation of furnishings.
When we leave, the intention is not simply that you enjoy your home in that moment, but that you continue to appreciate it for years to come, that the thoughtful planning, the detail, and the decisions made early on continue to earn their keep long after the dust has settled.
-
As involved as you would like to be.
Some clients enjoy being part of key decisions, others prefer to step back and trust us to guide the process. We are comfortable with both.
What is important, however, is that we are not simply implementing a series of individual preferences. Our role is to design a cohesive, considered home, one where every element works together.
We will always listen, interpret and refine your ideas, we will also challenge where needed and guide decisions based on our experience. That is how the most compelling spaces are achieved.
Our role is to lead the process, so the right decisions are made at the right time.
-
Because rushing is where things tend to go wrong.
Thoughtful, layered and considered design takes time. There are many decisions to be made, and they need to be made in the right order, with a clear understanding of how each one impacts the next.
Good design isn’t about speed, it’s about careful thought, testing ideas, refining them, and coordinating multiple elements so that everything works together properly.
You can move quickly, but it rarely results in the best outcome. More often, it leads to compromises that could have been avoided with a more considered approach.
-
Yes.
Much of our work is across the UK and abroad.
The way we structure our projects allows us to manage design and coordination properly, regardless of location.
-
We highly recommend that you look beyond Instagram.
A beautiful portfolio is one thing, but it doesn’t tell you how someone works. You need to understand their process, their level of detail, and how they manage a project when things become complex.
You are not just choosing a look. You are choosing who you trust to guide a significant investment.
-
If it doesn’t, something has gone wrong.
Our job is not to impose a style. It is to interpret how you want to live and translate that into a coherent design.
Done well, the result should feel more like you than anything you could have created alone.
-
No, but it isn’t for everyone.
It is less about the size of the property, and more about the intended quality of the finished result, This requires a level of investment, both in terms of time and cost, and the importance placed on getting it right.
Thoughtful design requires both. There is a natural alignment between what you are looking to achieve and the time and financial investment needed to do it properly.
The clients who benefit most from working with us are those who value that process, are making considered decisions about their home, and want a result that reflects that quality.
If you are looking for a quick fix, our full interior design service would not be the right fit, however, we can offer advice on your own project via our Design Concierge or Usher & Co studio day basis.
-
We are a studio, not a single viewpoint, because different eyes on a design will always see things a singular perspective misses.
We believe a home is not just something to look at, it is where life actually happens. It is where you start your day, where you entertain, where you rest and recover, and where many of your most significant life moments take place.
The life you live is grounded in your home. It is one of your most important assets, both financially and emotionally.
Our work goes beyond aesthetics. We consider proportion, materiality, light, and how each space needs to function day to day, not just on completion, but long after we have finished.
We are not trend driven, and we don’t believe in superficial design. Good design is something you connect with. We design homes where everything has been considered, and where each decision is made in the context of the whole.
Because when a home has been designed properly, it improves the way you live, how you spend time with family and friends, and, on a deeper level, your overall sense of wellbeing. A well designed space is powerful, and has the ability to positively shape many aspects of your life.
-
Trying to make too many disconnected decisions.
It is very easy to like everything. The challenge is knowing how to edit that enthusiasm and make decisions in the context of the whole, rather than as individual moments.
A kitchen chosen in isolation, lighting an after thought, furniture added piecemeal. It often leads to a space that doesn’t quite hang together in the way it should.
The other common issue is momentum. Chasing a trend too heavily, or changing direction part way through without fully understanding the impact on time, cost and the overall outcome.
Good design requires a level of experience so that mistakes and pitfalls can be avoided.
-
We don’t chase trends.
Instead, we focus on proportion, materiality, and how a space needs to work for you over time. Good design is not about what is current, it is about what will still feel right in five, ten, fifteen years.
We often talk about the difference between investment and fast fashion. You can fill a home quickly with pieces that follow a trend, but they rarely last, either in quality or in relevance. Or you can choose fewer, better things, pieces that are made well, considered properly, and designed to stay.
The same applies to the home as a whole. It should be designed for the different seasons of your life, not just for how it looks today.
A home that has been thought through properly will evolve with you. One that is driven by trends will quickly look outdated.
-
Working with skilled professionals comes with a cost, as it should.
Your home is likely your most valuable and important asset. Poorly considered design decisions and lower quality choices not only cost more in the long run, they also fail to deliver the level of comfort and satisfaction that a well specified home can.
It is not what you invest, but how you assess quality and understand what will stand the test of time that makes the difference. A smaller home, designed and specified to a high standard, will often feel far better to live in than a larger home approached without the same level of thought or investment.
Most of our clients come to us because they recognise the importance of the decisions they are making. They want to invest wisely, and create a home that is a genuine pleasure to live in.
